Good Morning MOJO,
I've known him for a long time and one of the things I can say about him is he's Tough…Hard…Unforgiving…Demanding.
No, he's not that way with other people…with them he's kind, sympathetic, understanding…always encouraging and supportive.
But those aren't gifts he gives to himself.
No, he cuts himself no slack. Sets high standards and keeps raising the bar. Tell him he did a good job, and he gets weird…tells you it was "OK"…and then says he could have done "more" or "done it better"…because in his own mind he's never good enough. Makes no difference what he does or how well he does it. And I want to say..."you are terrific! Will you please get off your own back?!”
But any suggestion that he's “just fine” the way he is quickly gets met with strong denial. Because his belief keeps telling him he's got to keep the pressure on…got to keep focusing on where he's less…got to keep targeting what he's done wrong, or else he'll somehow fall short and not measure up to his impossibly high standards.
And he's not alone.
Most of us have these same old beliefs that the best way to make ourselves perform is to crack the whip, be hard on ourselves, and beat ourselves up so we'll keep performing. But the truth is....what we focus on always expands!
Focus on what you did RIGHT, and you'll get more of it.
Focus on what you did WRONG, and that's what'll grow.
Focus on what's GOOD about you, and it will expand.
Focus on what's BAD about you, and it'll get worse.
I know that's too simple, but the truth always is…it's the "doing of the truth" that's hard. And "the doing" of this truth means that…it's time for you to get off your own back!
Yes, it's time to ignore those old voices that keep playing in your head telling you there's something wrong with you.
Sure you've made mistakes…we all have. Forgive yourself and move on! It's time for you to give yourself, beginning today, the same encouragement and support you'd give your best friend.
Not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it's also the best way to get the life you've always wanted (yes, that one).
Come on...it's time to let things get really good!
Make it a GREAT week and keep up the GREAT work!!!!
